The Creation of New Jobs
Florida needs to invest in the transition into the innovation economy by working to create more high-skilled, high-wage jobs for Floridians and increase research and development and expand venture capital into Florida. As your state representative, I will make sure the business climate is more competitive by streamlining regulation; eliminate duplicative functions, bureaucracy, and red tape burdens on employers attracting new businesses that will provide high-paying, quality jobs for the citizens of Florida and District 22.
Smarter Growth Management
We need to achieve a balance between conservation and rural economic development. We need to create a more efficient and effective state land use policy. We need to eliminate unnecessary land use regulations, streamline our planning and permitting process and limit excessive fees. I will work for measures to keep Florida affordable and attainable for all. I will continue to fight for attainable housing solutions for our workforce. I believe that teachers, police, fire, and medical workers all must be able to live in and be part of the community that they service.
Energy
Florida needs to adopt and support an energy policy that balances affordable, reliable and environmentally responsible sources while we promote energy, economic, and national security.
Crime
Laws on the books in Florida need to be enforced. We should aggressively enforce those which are on the books and prosecute criminals to the full extent of the laws. It is essential that we give our police and our courts the resources and the authority they need to effectively protect our communities. We can do this without taking away liberties from those who obey the laws. I support Governor Bush’s 10-20-Life initiative. This legislation created a minimum sentence of 10 years for those who commit a violent crime with a gun, 20 years if the criminal fires the gun while committing the crime, and 25 years to life if someone is harmed by a gunshot during the violent crime. I also support the death penalty and the three strikes rule that ensures that repeat felons stay off our streets. I will work to make sure criminals are prosecuted to the full extent of the law and that law abiding citizen’s liberties are not taken away.
Property Taxes
I believe in low taxes and in tax simplification. When people keep more of what they earn, they will save, spend, and invest those additional dollars, promoting freedom and responsibility, raising our standard of living, and benefiting the economy for us all. I will work to keep your taxes low.
World Class Education
A strong education system is critical to the long-term success of our community. I know Florida’s public education system can do better. I understand that education is the foundation upon which our economy, our government, and our community are built. We cannot let that
foundation crumble. Education is the foundation of opportunity and we must strive to continuously improve our educational system. We must do more to ensure Florida can attract and retain teachers who are qualified and quickly dismiss those who are not. We must implement strategies to reduce the administrative burdens on school districts and school district personnel, especially teachers. We must investigate innovative ways of teaching our children, but at the same time we must concentrate on the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic as the foundation upon which to build. The Internet is a great resource and a new medium for learning that is already in use in post-secondary institutions and the workplace. It is critical that Florida’s students have access to this new medium for learning. Additionally, parents must be involved in their child’s education since they are best situated to make decisions regarding their children’s education. They understand their child’s individual learning strengths and needs, and we must empower parents to provide their children with educational opportunities for success.
Affordable Health Care for Seniors
Most seniors are on fixed incomes and face the rising costs of medicine, doctor’s charges and assisted care. I will do everything in my power to lower these costs, provide quality health care, and community based home care.
